Welcome to DeLand

The energetic city of DeLand is located between the eastern shore of the St. Johns River and the hills of Central Florida. This unique community boasts nature-filled activities, community events, and a walkable downtown area full of unique shopping and fine-dining restaurants. The year-round pleasant weather compliments these features and allows residents to embrace nature.

DeLand's fascinating history began in 1876 when its founder Henry Addison DeLand stumbled upon the area during a family vacation in Florida. DeLand was struck by the beauty and serenity of what was to become DeLand and purchased it on the spot. Afterward, he made it his mission to create a town based on education and culture, which is precisely what DeLand did.

Also opened in 1876 was Stetson University, which is the oldest private college and the first law school in Florida. Centered in the middle of the downtown area, the university mixes old Florida with the excitement and culture of entertainment and boutique local businesses of today. An array of architectural styles gives the city an eclectic vibe, from the Mediterranean and Second Empire buildings of Stetson University to the Craftsman and Cottage-style residential properties.

DeLand’s proximity to major cities like Daytona and Orlando gives locals additional options for weekend getaways to explore attractions and Florida beaches. However, DeLand has an endless number of diverse events, which keep locals busy throughout the year. This makes the area perfect for individuals who appreciate history, a tight-knit community, and vintage Florida living at its finest.

What to Love

  • Exciting festivals and events
  • Cuisines from around the world
  • Community togetherness
  • Outstanding education programs

Local Lifestyle

DeLand is a suburban area that is home to about 38,000 residents. Neighborhoods are well-maintained, and the community plays a large part in preserving the area. As the winner of the “Great American Main Street Award” and a Main Street America™ Accredited Program member, DeLand residents show their dedication and commitment to building a strong city for future generations.

In addition to the stunning and artistic vibe of downtown DeLand, the city also has an abundance of parks and recreation areas that provide a laid-back ambiance. Residents enjoy nature and relish the scenic and peaceful landscape of the pine forests surrounding DeLand. This amazing mixture of on-the-go and leisure allows individuals to appreciate all aspects of DeLand.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

DeLand’s downtown is split into two notable districts known as the Historic District and Garden District, where a variety of boutique stores and fantastic restaurants are located. DeLand’s eateries serve different cuisines from all over the world, making each dining experience unique. Also, because of the outstanding downtown atmosphere, almost all of DeLand’s restaurants have indoor or outdoor seating options.

Opened in 2021, Cress Restaurant is a local favorite that boasts farm-to-table dishes. It also hosts brunches on holidays with specialty prix fixe menus to celebrate occasions with your friends and family. The cuisine is internationally-inspired but sourced from farmers in the area to promote sustainability.

Another popular spot is De La Vega -Wine, Tapas & Sangria- DeLand, perfect for a family outing or a romantic evening. Patrons can share plates of beautifully crafted tapas or order a Latin fusion entree. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free menus are also available. Just next door is Santorini Greek Cuisine, an authentic Greek restaurant with a simple ambiance and tremendous flavor. Diners can delight in homemade comfort food and incredible service from this family-owned business.

Founded by the McKenney family in 2014, Half Wall DeLand is a perfect location to enjoy a meal and root for your favorite sports teams. Although they provide all types of beverages, Half Wall boasts the largest beer selection in the county, with 76 beers on tap and 100 craft bottled beers. Residents can pull up a stool at the wood and brick-lined bar or grab a table in the cozy dining room with loved ones to share a meal.

Things to Do

Along with the amazing dining options, DeLand has endless events and festivals for residents to join throughout the year. One of the most notable attractions in the area is Athens Theatre, located in the town center. Designed in 1921 by renowned architect Murray S. King, the theatre is a stunning example of Italian Renaissance architecture. Today, it hosts many events, from musical productions to dramatic performances.

In addition to theatre, the city is home to many artistic events like the DeLand Sculpture Walk and DeLand Historic Mural Walk, which involve guided tours through the downtown area to view local talent. For an indoor experience, art lovers can visit the Museum of Art-Deland, which features art exhibitions regularly. Poetry readings, summer camp programs, and adult learning classes are also available.

DeLand also hosts monthly street festivals that bring neighborhoods together to enjoy the beautiful weather and various activities. Different festivals include the DeLand Dog Parade, Car Cruise, Fall Festival of the Arts, and DeLand Bike Rally. These cityside celebrations encourage the community to come together and celebrate the culture of DeLand.
